This session aims to explore the process of music composition for the stage. Beginning with a text, and following the creative and technical process through to the finished score, Nate will demonstrate his approach to creating music in an accessible and practical way.

This session is suitable for anyone with an interest in composition, whether it's something you are looking to get into yourself or something that you work in tandem within your own creative practice. You do not need to have any practical experience with writing music; Nate will be aiming to demystify the process of scoring, and hopefully inspire new ways of thinking about, approaching, and working with music for the stage, from the creative to the technical.

He will also explore how to communicate about music, and touch on the psychology of sound and music as it relates to theatre.

Whether you are a musician, director, writer, performer, or stage/production manager, there will be something to take away from this session that will be valuable to your own creative practice.

Learning outcomes include
  • Understanding the language and psychology of sound and music.

  • Understanding how a composer approaches their work, and the timelines involved in producing an original score.

  • An overview of the technical considerations and resources required by composers.

  • QLab programming skills.

Nate will deliver his Artist-2-Artist session via
  • On-demand video

  • Zoom Q&A

  • Notes and a list of links to free resources for beginner composers

The on-demand video will be a practical session covering the bulk of the content and will be available on-demand for 2 weeks. You will receive an email link to view the video on 11 May 2021.

Following the video release meet up with a Zoom Q&A on 18 May @ 6 pm - 7 pm, where Nate will be available to answer your questions, and explore any topics from the presentation in further depth.
