Join the young and charismatic Chroma quartet on an exploration of two great works of Metamorphosis- Ligeti's quartet no.1 and Beethoven's epic op.131.
Both composers stretched the quartet palette and emotional range in their respective periods and both works are heard as one movement pieces even though they're made up of several parts.
When Schubert heard Beethoven's op.131 he was overwhelmed and said: 'After this, what is left for us to write?'
This quartet is written in seven movements, but each one is performed in succession after the other creating a metamorphosis experience as each part melts naturally into the next.
Ligeti's first quartet is also written in a number of smaller movements but played as one, with new movements often interrupting the previous. Perhaps this was Ligeti's silent ode to Beethoven? The title 'Metamorphosis nocturnes' refers to the form of the piece...
A rare treat to hear two groundbreaking works in one afternoon.
Chroma Quartet:
Harry Bennetts - violin
Victoria Bihun - violin
Elizabeth Woolnough - viola
Eliza Sdraulig - cello
