The Tennant Creek Men's art program started in 2016 as an art therapy/outreach program set up by Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corp. The group, a mix of fringe dwellers and emerging cultural leaders, have continued to work together and often collaboratively, forming a unique and cutting-edge artists collective named 'The Tennant Creek Brio'.
Control Point is both exhibition and work title. The phrase is lifted from a caption found on a painted mining sitemap by Brio artist Joseph Williams Jungarrayi. In Control Point, the Brio continue to push conventions, drawing on imagery and traditions from the Wirnkarra (Dreaming), the Old Testament and mythic iconography from around the world, which they inscribe upon canvas, debris, and other salvaged materials.
Control Point represents the enthusiasm and dedication of the collective as they continue to develop a cathartic visual language fuelled by the complexities of life in Tennant Creek.
The Tennant Creek Brio are:
Lindsay Nelson Jakamarra
Fabian Brown Japaljarri
Clifford Thompson Japaljarri
Joseph Williams Jungurrayi
Marcus Camphoo Kemarre 'Double O'
Simon Wilson Pitjara
Rupert Betheras
Curated by Dallas Gold, Director.
Delmar Gallery is proud to be presenting this exhibition in collaboration with RAFT Artspace, Nyinkka Nyunyu Art & Culture Centre, Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation and Arlpwe Art and Culture Centre.
