Migration to Australia was - and often is - defined as organized travel, with a strong preselection of prospective immigrants. Self-payers were tolerated, people with uncertain backgrounds heavily scrutinized, and anyone without a right to stay was strongly discouraged from arriving. Migration to Australia also meant travel by ship, and here, clear hierarchies among the immigrants present themselves.
Some travelled in comfort and relative safety, while others began their journey with insufficient resources, unsafe vessels and no hope for support along the way. How did these travellers brave (or fail) their journeys? What tools did they use, and where are their vessels and tools now?
A free online webinar presented by the Australian National Maritime Museum.
