Aussie Aussie Aussie, Queer Queer Queer!

Nobody does queer cinema like Australia and Dendy Newtown is proud to serve up four fabulous homegrown films in celebration of Sydney World Pride. Join us for the deliciously campy fun of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Strictly Ballroom, the touching comedy/drama The Sum of Us, and the unforgettably powerful Holding the Man.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

They came. They conquered. They looked fabulous. Veteran actor Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving, AND Guy Pearce star in the three-fishes-outta-water story centred on three drag performers who brave the vast, rugged outback. With a contract to perform a drag show way out in the Australian desert, Tick (Weaving), Adam (Pearce) and Ralph (Stamp) each have their own reason for wanting to leave the safety of Sydney. Christening their battered pink tour bus 'Priscilla,' this wickedly funny and high-drama trio head for the Outback...and into crazy adventures in even crazier outfits.

Strictly Ballroom

Scott Hastings is a champion caliber ballroom dancer, but much to the chagrin of the Australian ballroom dance community, Scott believes in dancing 'his own steps'. Fran is a beginning dancer and a bit of an ugly duckly who has the audacity to ask to be Scott's partner after his unorthodox style causes his regular partner to dance out of his life. Together, these two misfits try to win the Australian Pan Pacific Championships and show the Ballroom Confederation that they are wrong when they say, 'there are no new steps!'

The Sum of Us

Harry Mitchell (Jack Thompson) has a problem with his gay son Jeff (Russell Crowe): Harry thinks he needs to find a mate! With a loving push out of the nightstand into the gay bars of Sydney, he becomes his son's biggest cheerleader. But it's Harry's secret romance with an attractive but judgmental divorce that puts father and son at odds and prompts them to discover that acceptance is a two-way street.

Holding the Man

Based on the international best-seller, Holding the Man is the sweeping love story of two high school boys, one the hunky captain of the football team and the other a sensitive drama student. After a sweet courtship, the two fall madly in love and traverse an enduring relationship over 15 years. Featuring Guy Pearce, Geoffrey Rush and Anthony LaPaglia, this inspirational true story captures the beauty and heartbreak of the best romances of our time.
