This workshop is part of the FOUNDATIONS dance & knowledge workshop series at Crossover Dance Studio. With the support of City of Sydney, these workshops will be offered for the first time for only $30 with limited spots available.

FOUNDATIONS aims to delve more deeply into, and facilitate the learning of dance history, culture and its community aspects, in addition to the standard teaching of the dance style's own distinct techniques and foundations. This will be taught over a 3-hour dance workshop catered to new students that includes time for Q&A, video viewing and other supplementary material.

INTRO TO AFRO: A History of Music and Dance

As taught by Tony Sletter (Riddim Nation)

OVERVIEW: This workshop is open to all those who would like to learn about and gain a deeper appreciation of Afro dance. Over the course of 3 hours, Tony will be covering both theoretical and practical aspects of Afro, going over Afro history and culture in addition to its dance and movement.

WORKSHOP CONTENT:

The 3-hour workshop aims to cover the following topics:

  • What is Afro?

  • What is afro music made of?

  • How afro-fusion as a dance style emerged?

  • Today's challenges: appreciation, appropriation, celebration

  • Core movements: the use of the pelvis as a driving energy

  • Practicing an earthy groove

  • Use of space and exits

  • Footwork and pathways

  • Navigating through music and dance

INSTRUCTOR BIO:

Tony is a dancer from France. He arrived in Sydney early 2019 when he started teaching afro beginner classes at crossover studios in the CBD. He later started getting more involved in the community, the street scene as well as the studio scene and the industry. He now also navigates through commercial, voguing and kpop, hoping to be able to cater to as many students as possible, and grow as a mover.
