What do you get when you pair up two young musicians with deep family ties to the trailblazing Australian band Yothu Yindi? Yolngu surf rock, of course.
King Stingray was formed by singer Yirringa Yunupiŋu, nephew of iconic Yothu Yindi singer Dr M Yunupingu, and guitarist Roy Kellaway, son of founding member and bass guitarist Stuart Kellaway. With multi-instrumentalist Dimathaya Burarrwanga on drums and percussion and Campbell Messer on bass and back-up vocals, King Stingray hails from Yirrkala, a community in East Arnhem Land.
The band's distinctive sound is already a hit on triple j, with 'Hey Wanhaka' and 'Get Me Out' blending surf, indie rock and funk with an earthy Yolngu rock growl. Their latest gem, 'Milkumana', is King Stingray in get-up-and-dance mode. And you'll be doing just that when these fellas bring the heat to Speakers Corner.
'One of the best live bands I've seen this year' - Declan Byrne, triple j
'King Stingray are one of Australia's most exciting new rock bands…[making] profoundly uplifting music' - NME
