Since releasing her first single in February 2019, 21-year-old Sydney artist Ella Haber has made her arrival known.
After receiving support for her debut EP, CLAY, from local and international radio (BBC 1XTRA, MiSoul, Jazz FM, Worldwide FM, triple J, FBi radio) Ella went on to sell out her first Sydney show, and complete her first East Coast headline tour, in celebration of the Jordan Rakei-produced record.
Following her tour up with supports for the likes of Julien Dyne & Lord Echo, Ella's reputation as a multi-instrumentalist - playing piano, trumpet and guitar - and powerfully evocative songwriter is weaving it's way through her communities, both at home and abroad.
Catching the ear of UK tastemakers, she recently returned from a run of international shows, invited to play Gilles Peterson's (BBC Radio 6/Brownswood) 'We Out Here' festival as the only act representing Sydney and spotlighted by Jamz Supernova (BBC 1XTRA/Future Bounce) for an exclusive London showcase, with Soul Has No Tempo label mate Tiana Khasi.
Shocked by a hushed crowd reaction at her first public performance, Ella's realisation her voice could halt and occupy an audience's thoughts bleeds into all aspects of her life. Raised on Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and many more of the poets of the 60's - along with the complex harmonies of Chopin through her classical piano training from age 5 - Ella fell in love with the swirling romance of jazz during her high school years, when she first tried her hand at songwriting.
The rabbit hole led her on a journey through the jazz/soul greats, from Ella Fitzgerald & Nina Simone through to Amy Winehouse & Erykah Badu. Nowadays, Ella takes inspiration from a broad stroke of artistry, exploring the indie folk & soft rock of Julia Jacklin & Big Thief, while still finding home amongst her alternative R&B contemporaries that shaped the sounds of CLAY.
In a genre, and society, where identity is increasingly scrutinised, Ella aims to create a space of reclamation and self-celebration, and a resounding sense that one is completely whole, before, during & after whoever tried to tell you otherwise.
