Discover the deep connection between nature and Nordic design, and how this relationship inspires sustainable, functional and beautiful buildings, houses, furniture, lighting and art.
Over four weeks, trace the origins of Nordic design from the late 19th-century to the golden era of the mid 20th-century where Nordic design was established as an international style. Explore the work of architects and designers like Alvar and Aino Aalto, Jørn Utzon, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Snøhetta, Finn Juhl, Hans J Wegner, Arne Jacobsen and Maija Isola, who created the iconic Marimekko design. The lectures will also address the contemporary concerns of designers who are preserving and reinterpreting their Nordic heritage and responding to the climate emergency.
Presented by Anthony Burke, Professor of Architecture at the University of Technology Sydney and Mark Ian Jones, Associate Professor, design historian and Chartered Architect at the University of New South Wales, uncover the beauty and craftsmanship of Nordic architecture and design from past to present.
Each lecture will be held on Friday and repeated on Saturday in the Domain Theatre. Each session includes a 15-minute intermission, during which tea and coffee will be provided in the Domain Theatre foyer.
