The beloved Early Music ensemble, Consort 8 presents Terpsichore - the Muse of Dance, with music ranging from the 14th century to Praetorius and Telemann.
Consort 8 began as a recorder ensemble of five players. The group has now expanded to include nine musicians - a countertenor, consorts of recorders and violas da gamba, lutes, theorboes and percussion. This is the only group of its kind in Sydney. Consort 8 is based at the beautifully renovated St Paul's Anglican Church, Burwood. Consort 8's repertoire is extensive, ranging from the 13th century to contemporary music including works written by Australians commissioned by the ensemble. The wealth of instruments in the consort allows a variety of colours and sonorities, enhancing the performance of the music, some of which have never been performed in Sydney. Consort 8 usually performs as a whole but occasionally breaks up into smaller groups depending on the repertoire and venue.
One of the few venues in Sydney that continued to support musicians during COVID-19 St James' lunchtime concerts are 30 minutes in length, commencing at 1:15pm, and are livestreamed, so patrons have the choice of attending in person or watching online.
A unique bonus is that online ticketholders can watch a recording of the concert as many times as they wish until the Tuesday following the concert.
Tickets are $10 and all proceeds go to the musicians and the cost of livestreaming.
Our musicians have been hit hard by pandemic, and St James' is thrilled to have the opportunity to support the professionals who give us such enjoyment and solace through their craft.
