Pianist Marc Cary forged his pedigree as a pianist for both Betty Carter and Abbey Lincoln then, from there he's played with Dizzy Gillespie, Art Taylor, Jackie McLean, Wynton Marsalis, Carlos Garnett, and the sublime Carmen McRae.
While his home turf is within jazz he's also accompanied Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badyu, M'Shell Ndegocello, and Ani Di Franco.
Since releasing his debut album as a leader in 1995 he's recorded thirteen more, exploring the potential of the piano trio but then plus electronics. His 'Rhodes Ahead' series of recordings where his brilliance as a keyboardist is on show uses the 'old technology' of analogue synthesizers as well as digital keyboards.
Through these explorations, he has influenced contemporaries such as Robert Glasper and Stefon Harris. The third branch of his art is his pan-ethnic collective Indigenous Peoples, where rhythms, poetry,
As New York Times jazz critic Nate Chinen observed recently, 'There isn't much in the modern-jazz-musician tool kit that Marc Cary hasn't mastered, but he has a particular subspecialty in the area of groove…with a range of rhythmic strategies, from a deep-house pulse to a swinging churn.'
