Sydney's own cutting-edge jazz and improvising collective Microfiche will make 107 home for 4 Mondays during March and April.
Known for their ethereal soundscapes and powerful improvisations, Microfiche will collaborate with some of Australia's greatest improvisers and feature support sets from our city's most forward-thinking artists, in a celebration of live and improvised music in our city.
The residency will also feature open rehearsals, a workshop and a BBQ by noted Sydney chef Tim Cassimatis (Bazaari, Vic's Meats).
Microfiche have invited some of Australia's greatest improvisers to share the stage during their residency, including master pianist Chris Abrahams (The Necks), iconic trumpeter Phil Slater (Band of Five Names), evocative guitarist and sound artist Sia Ahmad (Tangents) and the stunning looping vocals & multi-instrumentalism of Bonnie Stewart (Bonniesongs). Together they will present new works, conjure fresh improvisations and re-imagine music from the band's back-catalogue.
Each week will also feature support sets from Microfiche's favourite bands including Godriguez (solo), Adrian Lim-Klumpes & Nick Meredith, Clocks and Clouds and Jachlo. The residency will also feature an open rehearsal, a workshop and a BBQ by noted Sydney chef Tim Cassimatis (Bazaari, Alpha, Vic's Meat Market).
'[Microfiche's] six members have arrived at their own sophisticated, suspenseful and sometimes thrilling ways of combining composition and improvisation, with keen instincts for orchestration.' -John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald
About the band:
Six-piece collective Microfiche tie improvisation and composition into serpentine knots and unravel them live in unexpected and cathartic ways. The band initially formed in 2015 as a student jazz ensemble at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Five years on and Microfiche have shown themselves to be a unique creative force in Australian improvised music. In 2019 they embarked on a European tour, including a performance at Copenhagen Jazz Festival and in 2021 released their second studio album 'Everything and Other Infinities' on Portuguese label Creative Sources Rec.
