Monkey King Cabaret opened to sold out crowds Beneath the Tiger Moon in 2022; this year the Monkey King Cabaret is back with another ode to Asian excellence, this time Beneath the Dragon Moon.
The Monkey King Themselves, Charlie Chapstik/Daddy Charles, is here to bring another expectation subverting variety show, here to demolish archaic stereotypes and representation of Asian culture. So often, representation of Asian culture in media is one dimensional, catered to a western taste and "orientalised" for theatrical effect. This show is not here to be palatable or performative; it is simply a joyous gathering of talented human beings, sharing their stories and their art.
A celebration of culture, the Lunar New Year and the multifaceted kaleidoscope of Asian identifying artists in CBR and beyond, Beneath the Dragon Moon is nothing less than an unapologetic toast to brilliance. Welcome the performers you loved last year, and some brand new interstate faces for a night of drag, burlesque, classical Chinese dance, Lion Dance, song, boylesque, dance, poetry, storytelling, visual art.
