Isn't it time to emerge from winter hibernation, step out in to the sunshine, and swing into Spring? A great place to welcome in the new season is at the Australian Botanic Garden.

The Gardens' annual Paper Daisy display heralds the beginning of Spring and once again the Connections Garden will be transformed into a sea of colour featuring Western Australian Paper Daisies

Prepare for a feast of the senses, with the beautiful sight of thousands of pink, yellow and white daisies blanketing the flower beds. Savour the smell of the fresh soil and listen for the hum of bees and butterflies buzzing around this wildflower oasis. Paper daisies are laden with pollen making them a reliable food source for our indigenous bees and other insects

There will be around 1000 square metres of native paper daisies on display this year. The main species used for the display are Pink Everlastings (hodanthe chlorocephala ssp Rosea) and Yellow Everlastings (Schoenia filifolia ssp subulifolia). In the wild, these blooms carpet huge expanses of the Western Australian countryside throughout spring.

As you can imagine it takes months for a display of this magnitude to be prepared and created. In fact, preparation of the flower beds begins as early as April with slow-release organic native fertiliser added to the soil. Structures are also created to protect the seedlings from birds and animals such as ducks, rabbits or kangaroos, which may eat them.

The display is free to enjoy and open to the public every day during their season from 8am to 5pm. Depending on the weather the daisies will be on display until the end of October. You will find the paper daisies in the Connections Garden, adjacent to the Visitor Centre.

It is important to pay attention to the signage indicating where to stand if taking photos of your friends or family with the daisies, and under no circumstances should you stand in the garden beds. Visitors are also urged to comply with all social distancing requirements in line with the latest NSW Health advice.
