Local artist Jane Sankey will be hosting her debut solo exhibition that celebrates the joy of Australian bushland, birdlife and native flora at the lovely light Christie Cotter Gallery in Camperdown.
During the past year of lockdowns, Jane discovered nature's healing power and she looks forward to sharing with you her inspired creations. Jane is a largely self taught artist who paints very intuitively and expressively so you can see the energy through her brushstrokes. She is not afraid to use colour and it is evident in her vibrant works.
'As restrictions lifted stage by stage, the world I painted expanded accordingly as I allowed myself to dream of adventures further afield. Still obsessed with the Australiana theme, my palettes found new homes in the Australian landscape - the intense outback, the wild coast, the meditative bushland
When I paint, I am hoping to take the viewer on a little journey, to invoke the emotion that was present in me as I created the painting. I'm not neat and do not aim for accuracy but rather my brushstrokes are intuitive and reflective of how the subject makes me feel. It is my wish as an artist that my viewer gains the same sense. Ocean waves make me feel free and wild and I unleash brushstrokes that are fast, flowy and powerful. The steadiness and weight of rocks and cliff faces ground me and I paint with greater intention and weight on my brush. For the feathers of a bird or details of a native bloom, I slow down to a meditative pace to appreciate the intricate perfection so that the viewer can sense the preciousness and vulnerability of our fauna and flora.
I am drawn to painting nature as it gives me the freedom to express intuitively and celebrate the perfection in imperfection. There is such vulnerability surrounding our climate, native creatures and land that I hope each of my paintings acts as a reminder of how incredible this planet is and how we need to appreciate and protect it.'
