Sometimes called the Temple of Democracy, Sydney Town Hall has long been the setting for the public expression of protest and a stage for debate and discussion.

Conscription, wages, Green Bans, gay rights and Black Lives Matter are just some of the many topics which have brought people into the city to march together and show their support for important social, human rights and political campaigns. City of Sydney curator Margaret Betteridge explores the civic collection to illustrate how artists have recorded significant protests in our city.

Margaret Betteridge is the curator of the City of Sydney's civic collection. She enjoys sharing special stories about Sydney through some of the City of Sydney's fascinating and intriguing objects and archives.
