2022 has been a busy year for printmaker Seraphina Martin. She has exhibited work in Visum (Addison Road Community Centre), Through My Eyes (Gosford Regional Gallery), illustrated the cover for Beatriz Copello's poetry collection, curated the annual Glebe Art Show curated the International Print Exchange (See Street Gallery, Meadowbank TAFE) and has prepared for her solo exhibition at The Shop Gallery, Glebe.
Seraphina brings a broad cultural knowledge to her work. She was born in Italy, her artist parents travelled widely, living in India for 7 years.
Seraphina's work has been influenced by ancient Indian compositional methods that placed the artists' narratives on the same plane and by its rich use of detail and vivid colouring. Works in this exhibition showcases her time as artist in residence in Calcutta and her Indian experience.
More recently Seraphina has focussed on the technique of drypoint etching in which the image is incised into perspex with a sharp point. Seraphina's drypoints are exquisitely detailed and very lyrical renditions of a personal mythology embodying her perspectives on issues troubling the contemporary world. These beautiful works demonstrate her immense skilfulness, originality and visual refinement.
