For SALA 2023 KI inspired printmakers Jenny Clapson and Janet Ayliffe reprise forty artworks to demonstrate Jenny's practice in pioneering expertise in solar plate etching and examples of Janet's etching from each KI show since 2010.
Jenny Clapson is arguably Kangaroo Island's most celebrated artist represented in State and National collections. She grew up in Broken Hill and painted in her formative years with the 'Brushmen of the Bush'.
Janet Ayliffe was born and lived on Kangaroo Island prior to studying at the SA School of Art, where she met her sister-in-law to be Jenny Clapson.
Following graduation in 1972, and Jenny's relocation to Kangaroo Island, the two joined other studio artists to regularly meet and support each other over their respective five decade art careers.
Jenny worked remotely from KI. Following her acclaimed solo exhibition 'Shared Territory' in the mid nineties at her Kingscote gallery at the Wharf grew a fascination with the jetty, the Island's marine environment, and inspired her painting printmaking practice.
Janet taught painting to numerous students on the mainland and developed as a highly regarded awarded printmaker/painter. She considers the natural world with wonder and reverence, as she does with her inner life, combining and layering these in a unique visual expression. Her work for this exhibition are pictures and drawings of her heartlands, on this long-ago island.
