In this session you'll hear all about how photography is being used here and around the world for good, to shine a light on disadvantage and marginalisation and to encourage social change.
We will discuss exhibitions in this year's Festival including St Vincent's Hospital's Ice St Project, featuring the work of people experiencing homelessness in inner-city Sydney, and the Everday Project's Women on the move, highlighting the issues women face in migration.
The artists involved in The Ice St Project are all experiencing homelessness within the inner city of Sydney. Whilst at Tierney House and engaging in this project, many participants received treatment for a range of complex health needs. Adult men and women of all ages residing in the accommodation were invited to participate in The Ice St Project. For some, this project was the first time they used a camera and took photographs. Their names are withheld for privacy and safety reasons. For this talk, we will be joined by Alice McAuliffe, art curator, St Vincent's Hospital Sydney.
The Everyday Projects uses photography to challenge harmful stereotypes and misperceptions that distort our understanding of the world. We believe in amplifying local voices and shifting power away from monolithic narratives dominated by a Western, top-down approach to storytelling. We work toward a future of photojournalism and visual storytelling that is inclusive and anti-racist. Women on the move was led and included work by Everyday Projects community team member Danielle Villasana (USA) and also featured stories by Everyday Projects photographers Amrita Chandradas (Singapore), Ksenia Kuleshova (Russia), Miora Rajaonary (Madagascar), Mridula Amin (Australia), Nichole Sobecki (USA), Saiyna Bashir (Pakistan), and Thana Faroq (Yemen).
