Hear glorious Bach at The Concourse this Easter when Sydney Philharmonia Choirs perform his majestic St John Passion.
Woven within will be 2 new specially commissioned 'reflections' to offer a 21st-century perspective to inspire new contemplation. Elizabeth Scott conducts The Chamber Singers, a stellar cast of soloists and the Sydney Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra on period instruments.
No longer do you need to sit for hours in a pew on Good Friday in order to hear one of Bach's mighty 'sermons in sound'. The dramatic, almost theatrical, power of his St John Passion - a vivid enactment of the Easter story - has transcended its church origins to speak a universal, musical message that combines storytelling and meditation.
This is what inspired us to commission two brief 'reflections' by Australian composers Jo Twist and Brooke Shelly, commenting on questions posed by this great music. In many ways, this will be the St John Passion as you've always heard it - turbulent and majestic, anguished and comforting, furious and serene - but with a 21st-century perspective to inspire new contemplation.
2 concerts only (1pm & 7pm) Saturday 3 April. The Concourse, Chatswood.
