This feature film documents a series of awe-inspiring happenings and moments of spontaneous creativity during a 6500 km train ride across the country, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. A rotating cast of artists, musicians and performers join Aitken along the way - including Beck, Mark Bradford, Jackson Browne, Thomas Demand, William Eggleston, Olafur Eliasson, Sam Falls, Urs Fischer, Thurston Moore, Ernesto Neto, Cat Power, Ed Ruscha, Savages, Stephen Shore, Patti Smith, Mavis Staples, The Black Monks of Mississippi, and many more.
About the film
Station to Station (2013) is a kinetic or moving light sculpture in the form of a train that travelled across North America, from New York City to San Francisco, in September 2013. It made ten stops along the way for a series of site-specific happenings in New York, Pittsburgh, St Paul, Chicago, Kansas City, Lamy New Mexico, Winslow Arizona, Barstow, Los Angeles and Oakland.
62 one-minute films make up the resulting feature film. It takes viewers on a journey from the Atlantic to the Pacific, capturing dynamic moments, exchanges and performances by an ever-changing creative community encompassing art, music, food, literature and film.
This film screening is presented alongside the Sydney International Art Series exhibition Doug Aitken: New Era.
