This September, Blacktown Arts will be presenting the spectacular 'Terra inFirma: Sovereignty and Memory' exhibition. This will be the second exhibition in the Terra inFirma series. The exhibition will showcase exploring Country, landscape, sovereignty, memory, trauma and identity.

The inFirma exhibition will focus on the on-going impacts of colonisation around the world, and this exhibit could not be timelier with the celebration of 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook's arrival in Australia as well as with the Black Lives Matter movement.

According to Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale, OAM "This exciting project sees First Nations and culturally diverse artists share their stories of history, heritage and identity with a focus on the experiences of communities represented in Blacktown."

The artists' works will reflect upon the complexity and significance of Country and the histories and experiences absorbed by that land. The event will also feature drawings, installations, performances and workshops.

Artists and works that will be featured at the exhibition include:

Alex Byrne- Blacktown artist, Byrne reflects on 250 years of colonisation as a non-First Nations Australian through a series of drawings.

Gary Carsley, Leanne Tobin and students from Chifley College Bidwell College will present a large-scale installation.

Dean Cross looks at the inequalities in the politics of historical preservation and asks why one birthplace is more valuable than another.

Brian Fuata, Jasmine Gufford, Julie Bukari Webb, Jumaadi, Judy Watson, and Julie Vulcan will also be showcasing at the Exhibit.

The event will be live-streamed on the Blacktown Arts Facebook Page and an Online Launch will be held on 10th September 2020. See website for all details.
