Back by popular demand, join us at Anzac Square Memorial Galleries for a free talk exploring the origin and history of Anzac Day, with two sessions to choose from: Sunday 24 April at 10.30am or Monday 25 April at 1.30pm.

Anzac Day is Australia's most observed commemorative day and began over a century ago, during World War I, with the first services and parades held in 1916. Whilst the original intention of the Anzac Day Commemoration Committee was to honour those who fell in service, this talk will explore the key events that broadened the meaning of Anzac Day, and helped establish the rituals, symbols, and traditions we're familiar with today including:

  • The first Dawn Service
  • The Ode of Remembrance - a verse from For the Fallen, a poem by English poet and writer Laurence Binyon
  • The Last Post and Reveille
  • Poppies and sprigs of rosemary

This talk will also draw on stories, diaries, letters, and photographs from State Library's military collection to show how Queenslanders across the state have commemorated Anzac Day in recent years.

After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries - embarking on an interactive journey from the First World War to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands.

Please note, Anzac Square Memorial Galleries will be open special hours on Anzac Day, Monday 25 April, from 5:30am-3pm.

Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.
