In the tradition of monastic life there is a practice of repentance. When a monk or nun makes a mistake, they come before the sangha and express their regret. In Plum Village, in addition to this practice, Beginning Anew is included to help resolve difficulties between monastics.
Beginning Anew is also a practice that is appropriate and can be skillfully adapted and applied by lay sangha to help heal misunderstandings or upsets that occur with family, friends or in the sangha in the course of daily lives.
We will explore the ways this practice can soften our perspective of a given situation. How when we are no longer caught in misperceptions, irritation and judgment we can more easily reconcile ourselves with others.
About the speaker
John Barclay is a Lay Dharma Teacher in the Plum Village tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh.
John began practicing mindfulness meditation in 1995 with the Lotus Buds group on Wednesday evenings at the Buddhist Library. He received the lamp transmission from Thich Nhat Hanh in 2004. His teacher's transmission poem encouraged him to share the dharma with young people and in 2011, after retiring from paid work, he became a volunteer SRE teacher through the NSW Buddhist Council. Today he continues to share mindfulness and Buddhist values with young people in both primary and high schools as well as facilitating Wednesday evenings at the Buddhist Library with the Lotus Bud group. He has also enjoyed a long and continued association with Unibuds, Sydney Wake Up group, the youth at Minh Quang Temple in Canley Vale and in running workshops for new Buddhist SRE Teachers through NSWBC .
