Bystander intervention workshops to stop Covid-19 racism 2020
The racialised narrative surrounding Covid-19 has sparked a surge in racial abuse targeting People of Colour.Whether it's a new poll finding almost one third of Australians blame the Chinese community for the pandemic. Or a study by the Migrant Worker Justice Initiative revealing a quarter of Australia's international students faced racial abuse during the pandemic. Or an Asian Australian Alliance survey collecting more than 500 stories from People of Colour of coronavirus-related racial abuse within a few months.People of Colour are experiencing a surge of racially motivated attacks. That's why we're launching regular bystander intervention workshops to empower allies to effectively and safely intervene when they see racial abuse.These free three hour interactive online workshops will cover:The types of racial abuse People of Colour are facing in this momentThe positive impact of bystander interventionEvidence-based bystander intervention methodology to safely interrupt racial abuseAnd space to practically roleplay scenarios in a safe environmentParticipants will leave with the tools- strategies and confidence to safely support someone experiencing discrimination.These workshops are free and open to anyone (although we particularly encourage people who identify as allies to attend) so please share with your family- friends & networks. Learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop to prepare your own artwork or design that we'll laser cut for you.Led by an experienced facilitator over Zoom- these fun interactive workshops are a great introduction to the popular Adobe Photoshop software. Choose from 2 different workshops to design your own laser cut stamp or artwork.In each workshop you'll be guided through how to prepare your existing image or design using Photoshop. Once you're happy with your final design- we'll laser cut or etch it for you at our Darling Square Library makerspace. Art out of Joy 2020
Audrey Rhoda lives and works in Katoomba- a creative hub in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. She has exhibited extensively over the past 20 years both in Australia as well as in New York- Los Angeles- and Paris.Art Out of joy is an exhibition of her extensive body of work on canvas- board and paper. It includes a number of 'revisited and reconstructed remainders ' from past exhibitions together with recent work. Many of these works incorporate her unique beeswax layering technique. She is well known for her popular workshops- based on this technique - which uses beeswax as an encaustic medium in her painting process .For Art Out of Joy she has compiled over 150 documented artworks. As shown in her digital catalogue- her artworks are available for sale in all sizes- on canvas- paper and board - framed and unframed- stretched and unstretched- mounted and unmounted.Rhoda has significantly reduced her past catalogued prices to make her work affordable specifically for this show in the hope that art lovers with a good eye will be able to pick up some real bargains. She will be in the gallery throughout the run of the show to talk to anyone interested in her process- art practice and philosophy on life.Covid-19 safe procedures operate at the gallery. We record names for contact tracing- supply hand sanitiser- disinfect our surfaces and have only 12 people in the gallery at a time- applying social distancing.

Pantsula is a distinctive dance style that emerged during Apartheid in South Africa. This energetic and spontaneous dance expressions of black townships continue to amaze and inspire young people across the world. Zimbabwe-born dance artist Thubalethu Ndibali is an experienced Pantsula teacher who introduced this dance form to Shaun Parker & Company.In these one-hour weekly workshops- participants will gain important knowledge about the cultural context of Pantsula.Rooted in a spirit of empowerment and freedom- learning this Pantsula will help to build the participant's self-confidence. Through the learning of energetic- technical footwork- participants will benefit from a great physical and mental workout.
