Bystander intervention workshops to stop Covid-19 racism 2020
The racialised narrative surrounding Covid-19 has sparked a surge in racial abuse targeting People of Colour.Whether it's a new poll finding almost one third of Australians blame the Chinese community for the pandemic. Or a study by the Migrant Worker Justice Initiative revealing a quarter of Australia's international students faced racial abuse during the pandemic. Or an Asian Australian Alliance survey collecting more than 500 stories from People of Colour of coronavirus-related racial abuse within a few months.People of Colour are experiencing a surge of racially motivated attacks. That's why we're launching regular bystander intervention workshops to empower allies to effectively and safely intervene when they see racial abuse. These free three hour interactive online workshops will cover:The types of racial abuse People of Colour are facing in this momentThe positive impact of bystander interventionEvidence-based bystander intervention methodology to safely interrupt racial abuseAnd space to practically roleplay scenarios in a safe environmentParticipants will leave with the tools- strategies and confidence to safely support someone experiencing discrimination. These workshops are free and open to anyone (although we particularly encourage people who identify as allies to attend) so please share with your family- friends & networks. Special thanks to the City of Sydney whose generous support has made these workshops possible.

Connected: MCA Collection 2020
Celebrating some of our most significant recent acquisitions alongside MCA Collection highlights- Connected brings together a selection of works by Australian artists that explore ways in which we might interpret and interact with the world and each other. This exhibition takes us from rural southern New South Wales to the vast Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) lands- which span the central desert region of remote north-west South Australia- over to the east Kimberly region of Western Australia- up to Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory- and across the seas to the Tiwi Islands- the Torres Strait- and beyond to Indonesia.Through a diversity of materials and approaches- the works included in this exhibition articulate a sense of deep connection - to place- people or worldviews - drawing on multiple perspectives and cultural traditions from across the country and beyond. They reveal important expressions of cultural knowledge- commentary on difficult shared histories- evocations of landscape and representations of particular ideologies. Together- they highlight social- cultural and emotional connections that influence who we are and how we may relate to the world.Curator: Manya SellersArtistsBob BurruwalRosalie GascoigneMabel JuliJumaadiNoŋgirrŋa MarawiliJack NawililAlick TipotiBede TungutalumKunmanara Williams
