Hear stories of the weird and wonderful animals that have served as battalion mascots in this free talk at Anzac Square Memorial Galleries.
Kangaroos, wombats, koalas, rabbits, dogs, and a Tasmanian devil! Many AIF battalions brought animal mascots with them to provide comfort and boost morale. But where did they come from? What did they eat? How did they behave amongst the soldiers? And what became of them?
In this free talk, we take a light-hearted look at the marvellous menagerie of creatures who accompanied our troops as they departed for the front, including:
- Kanga, a winking, drinking kangaroo mascot that became one of the boys
- Linky, a beloved, prize-winning Alsatian mascot of the 2/10th Battalion that raised comfort funds for servicemen
- Rudolph, a rabbit mascot of the 2/9th Battalion that had his own uniform and beer mug
After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries - embarking on a free interactive journey from World War I to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands.
Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.
