Designed for students with some taiko playing experience, both Elements classes focus on the integration of movement of bachi, arms and body, good sound production, development of speed, endurance, breath control, and a solid sense of rhythm.
Musical works involving a variety of taiko styles are learned over the course of the year, with students encouraged to perform at our annual Australian Taiko Academy concert - a fantastic opportunity to consolidate learning and play in front of a supportive audience!
Key learning points in both Elements I and II are:
Studying a variety of traditional taiko styles
Learning the accompanying kuchi shoga (taiko rhythm vocals)
Learning and practicing a musical composition
Practicing pieces called renshu that involve specific musical and technical challenges
Developing general musicianship
Learning about aspects of Japanese culture and taiko history
The fundamental difference between Elements I and Elements II is that the latter is designed for students who wish to challenge themselves a little bit more, both technically and musically.
Both classes are challenging and hard working, but most of all, they are still fun! Be prepared to work and play hard!
Students have the opportunity to perform at the annual Australian Taiko Academy concert, held in December.
It is the Academy's policy that students must wear hearing protection while attending our classes. You can bring your own ear plugs, or purchase reusable ear plugs from our shop for $35 or disposable foam ear plugs at the dojo for $1.50.
