2021 marks the 40th anniversary of the Balgo art movement's beginnings. It also marks the first time many of the earliest paintings from Balgo will be publicly displayed alongside vibrant new works created in response. Balgo is an art historical narrative with most of the early pages torn out.

Balgo is one of the most famous schools of desert art. On the fringe of the Kimberley and Desert it is home to multiple language groups who settled there over the course of the twentieth century. Stylistic diversity, born of this cultural complexity, and wild colour have long been a hallmark of the artists' aesthetic. Beyond this collective vibrancy, Balgo has also been home to some of the most revered figures in modern Western Desert painting.

This free exhibition is presented as part of the Art Gallery of South Australia's Tarnanthi 2021 festival and will run until February 2022.

The Balgo Beginnings exhibition is accompanied by the launch of a ground-breaking new publication in Aboriginal art, Balgo: Creating Country by Professor John Carty. The book is available for purchase online Balgo: Creating Country - UWA Publishing and at the South Australian Museum shop.
