For History Week 2021, please join Brad Manera, Senior Historian and Curator at the Anzac Memorial, as he recounts the extraordinary story of 22-year-old pilot Francis Mathers from Pagewood in Sydney.
Hear how Frank's courage and skill earned him the extremely rare Conspicuous Gallantry Medal, only 9 weeks before his body was recovered from a Halifax Bomber crash 78 years ago.
Brad will also discuss his book 'In That Rich Earth', an account of how the Anzac Memorial seeks to preserve the memory of the courage, endurance and sacrifice of young men like Frank - and the thousands of other Australian aviators who died in the air war over Europe - by collecting soil samples from the battlefields on which they fought and died and embedding them in the floor of the Hall of Service.
This is a free and online event. Registrations are essential.
This event is a part of History Week 2021 #fromthegroundup, organised by the History Council NSW.
Hosted by Sutherland Shire Libraries.
