Phoenix Collective presents Digital Sessions : Different Trains 'The Crack Train to New York'.

Phoenix Collective announces the release of the first of its Digital Sessions: Different Trains presented as an online event and fundraiser.

This screening of Phoenix Collective Quartet (PCQ) uses an ISO filmed and recorded performance of Steve Reich's innovative Different Trains and pre-recorded tape by Kronos String Quartet.

This work reflects on train travel during the 1940s in America and Europe. Making use of prerecorded train sounds, warning signals and actual voice recordings of train conductors and Holocaust survivors. This will then soundtrack the world premiere of a film created for this event by renowned Sydney videographer Sina S of VDO Symptoms (official selection in Short and Sweet Film Festival and Sydney Indie Film Festival 2017/ Filmagination 2019/ Elements Fundraiser for Bushfires Relief 2020) .

The fundraiser:

The goal of this project is to raise funds to convert PC's 2020 concert programs into digital, high-quality audio and visual presentations. The project is particularly important during a time of uncertainty and financial hardship for Australian artists, when all are being asked to do more with less, while still thinking outside the box.

The Phoenix Collective brings together high-profile Australian musicians for a captivating recital series that showcases classical music with a uniquely Australian edge.

Launched in 2018, 'The aim is to take high-end classical music performed by accomplished musicians to local audiences in intimate and iconic venues'. Its broad repertoire spans classical, contemporary and experimental genres: the virtuosic flair of Italian Baroque, the spirited simplicity of Folk Music, the intensity of Romanticism, slick Jazz cross-over, the meditative calm of Minimalism, and more. To date its players have come from the ranks of national and international orchestras such as Academy of St Martin in the Fields, BBC Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Canberra Symphony, Kammer Philharmonie Köln, the Juilliard School, Opera Australia Orchestra, and Sydney Symphony.

As we know, the effects of Covid-19 were immediate and tangible in nature. Within a week, all performance venues had closed for the foreseeable future, which left the remainder of the 2020 season uncertain. In response, The Phoenix Collective plans to continue to deliver its music to its subscribers, followers and online audience, aided by funding and resources. These resources will consist of an online digital platform to present future live performances and share their artistic vision further afield as well as providing meaningful employment for the artists involved. This is the first of three online performances planned for the year.
