The Korean Cultural Centre Australia presents its first exhibition for 2024, Field of Vision: Wona Bae and Charlie Lawler.

Acting like a time capsule for future, Bae and Lawler's practice probes the periphery of the natural and cultural landscape. Documenting daily observations of their interactions with natural world, recording current environmental conditions through photography, video, sound and data.

Field of Vision continues this exploration in a select collection of the artists of photographic and sculptural works. A highlight of this exhibition is a series 24 photographs in which Bae and Lawler capture the textures and patterns of the miniature world of Lichens and present them as large format prints. Distorting the tiny and often overlooked form of Lichen the pair offer a rare chance to see these micro-organisms in all their detail. The pair are drawn to the fascinating life of Lichen, from its ability to grown in the harshest alpine environments to the park in the city centre. It lives as a unique symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi when conditions are just right, and is an effective bio indicator in our environment. These photographs taken over the past year, come from various locations throughout Australia and South Korea.

ARTISTS

Wona Bae from South Korea and Charlie Lawler from Australia form a collaborative duo renowned worldwide for their installations and sculptures, which explore the intimate and interconnected relationships between individuals and the natural world. Frequently tailored to specific locations, their installations engage in a meaningful conversation with the architecture or space that surrounds them. Through their artworks, they dismantle and transform familiar natural forms, introducing new landscapes for contemplation and exploration. Bae and Lawler present the dynamic and central role of the natural world, offering a perspective in an era marked by polarization, inequality, inaction, and apathy. Their artistic practice seamlessly integrates installation, sculpture, relief, sound, and photographs that document transient interventions.
