This showcased event has concluded.
The next exhibition to come to the Council House Foyer Gallery is Howard Taylor: Studies in Light.
This exhibition brings together a selection of rarely seen artworks by Howard Taylor from the Janet Holmes à Court Collection. Featuring over twenty artworks from the 1970s and 1980s, it showcases a moment in Western Australian art history when light was captured and wielded with precision and elegance by one of WA's leading abstract landscape artists.
Taylor was a highly esteemed artist, adept at capturing the essence of the qualities of light in the Western Australian landscape. From his studios in the Southwest, he created ethereal, sublime and austere artworks, sensitive to the shifting nuances of colour and tone as the sun crosses the landscape and filters in through the trees over the course of a day.
Taylor abstracted light in mysterious, compelling and precise meditations on the visual phenomena of the Karri Forest. He had a scientific approach to the quality of light and was capable of conveying this in such a way as to distill the felt experience of dawn, dusk, intense sunlight and the soft pastel tones of sun through green leaves.
Howard Taylor: Studies in Light is a rare opportunity to experience these artworks all together and be transported into the luminosity and unique spectrum of the Western Australian bushland.
