A cellist and composer of extraordinary technical skill, Luigi Boccherini's La Musica Notturna delle Strade di Madrid transports you to the lively streets of Madrid at night, filled with the echoes of church bells, military drums, and the spirited notes of guitar-playing cellists.
This cello deep-dive also includes Vivaldi's vivacious Cello Concerto in B minor as well as music by Italian cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima, dubbed the 'crazy Sicilian' for his death-defying virtuosity, operatic melodrama and Hendrix-like flair.
Into the present (and the future), this performance ends with a world premiere from UK composer and cellist Peter Gregson, known for his extensive film and concert work, as well as his re-imagining of Bach's Cello Suites as part of the acclaimed Deutsche Grammophon Recomposed series.
