This March, Ian Thorpe AM is challenging people across Australia to swim for youth mental health with Laps for Life. Registration is free.
Whether you're new to the water or a competitive swimmer, Thorpie is challenging you to dive in from 1 to 31 March and swim laps at your local pool, hit the beach or take part in an ocean swim to save lives and support youth mental health.
One in four young people in Australia are currently experiencing a mental health difficulty and sadly 70% of those who need help don't get it. Suicide remains the leading cause of death for young people in Australia. We also know that the pandemic has disproportionately impacted the lives of young people as they navigate challenges such as stress about school, study and the future.
Laps for Life is open to all ages and swimming abilities. All you have to do is sign up as an individual, or as a team with your colleagues, family or friends, and set your goal using the lap calculator. Spread the word, swim and log your laps or KMs, and fundraise to help prevent youth suicide.
The money raised by taking part in Laps for Life will help Australia's most accessed online mental health service for young people, ReachOut, continue to support young people in Australia.
Swimming can also be a wonderful way to connect with other people and improve your mental and physical wellbeing. Whether you're doing laps in the pool or hitting the beach, we would love to see you in the water to swim to save lives this March!
