In this four-part lecture series led by Claudia Chan Shaw, explore the intriguing origins, influences and key figures of art nouveau, including the lives and work of innovative artist Alphonse Mucha, French architect and designer Hector Guimard and Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi.
Popular from 1890 to 1910, art nouveau was a 'new art' for the coming century, an elegant decorative style that influenced architecture, fine art, illustration and advertising as well as the design of objects such as jewellery, glassware and furniture. While a rather short-lived movement, art nouveau has left a lasting impression on design.
Claudia Chan Shaw is a television and radio presenter, author, public speaker, fashion designer, curator, artist and collector. She is a host of TV programs Antiques DownUnder and Collectors, and has lead numerous design-focused tours locally and overseas for the Art Gallery Society of New South Wales.
Each lecture in this series will be held on Friday and repeated on Saturday in the Domain Theatre. Each session includes a 15-minute intermission, during which tea and coffee will be provided in the Domain Theatre foyer.
