ODYSSEY explores the possibilities when combining a traditional string quartet arrangement together with piano, cajon and tabla.
After many tours and performances with flamenco ensembles around Australia, Byron has developed a strong passion for flamenco rhythms. He has used his knowledge to craft unique compositions inspired by these rhythms, yet coloured with classical and jazz harmonies to reveal exciting and surprising sonic possibilities.
In pursuit of this sound, the 'Byron Mark Septet' was formed; a powerful live ensemble with members from all around the world.
Maharshi Raval (India) on tabla and Giorgio Rojas (Peru) on cajon bring their cultural influences and variations into the pieces, and their fantastic improvisation skills promise a captivating performance. Byron also plays cajon in a few numbers to create a dynamic percussion trio.
The String Quartet comprises of Anna Murakawa (Brazil) and Bronwyn Harrowsmith (Australia) on violins; Phoebe Gilbert (Australia/Canada) on viola; and and Damian de Boos-Smith (Italy/Australia) on cello. Together, they also bring a wealth of knowledge and performance experience to the Septet.
Byron has also invited some special guest flamenco dancers to this event to connect the flamenco inspirations and explorations with the music. The launch event will feature the amazing Chachy Penalver & Lauren Majarres (Sydney), and Roshanne Wijeyeratne (Adelaide).
There will also be other special guest appearances throughout the evening - so don't miss out!
Byron's first album AMALGAMATION (2016) received great response and put Byron on the map as a solo artist, composer and collaborator. The album also placed him top 5 in the country for Instrumental Composition at the Australian Independent Music Awards in 2016, and his percussion track 'Dos y Dos' was featured in a tourism add in Spain.
A limited number of vinyl records of ODYSSEY will also be available to audience members at the launch concert.
