Printmaking: Introduction to block printing (16+ years) 2022

During this 4-week course you'll learn to compose, prepare, transfer and print your designs using a variety of simple hand printing techniques.

You'll start with the basics of image selection and composition, then practice preparing and marking scratchboard, linoleum, wood and rubber printing blocks.

Under the guidance of our experienced tutor, you'll experiment with different techniques, including carving, scratching and scraping. Learn how to achieve different types of line and tone using a variety of tools.

Then explore techniques using traditional hand printing tools like barens and burnishers and learn how to use a registration jig to overlap colours on a single image.

During the course you'll create a number of prints in both black and white and colour.

Full instruction is provided on materials, products, tools, equipment and studio procedures.

Small class size: up to 8 students.

Level: designed for beginner-level students.

Wear: comfortable clothing and enclosed shoes (aprons provided).

Bring: all materials including stock paper provided. Please discuss with your tutor if you want to bring your own specialty papers.
