Join us during the week of Remembrance Day for a free, 45-minute guided tour of Anzac Square Memorial Galleries exploring the history, traditions, and Queensland war heroes that exemplify this important day.
We've searched through State Library's extensive military collection to bring you some of our favourite stories of courage, resilience, and sacrifice from the home front and the warfront, as we guide you on an interactive journey from the First World War to today.
Some of the stories you'll hear on this special tour include:
- Francis Henry Staunton - a 28-year-old shearer from Richmond, he was hit and killed by a shell while returning from his last delivery as a runner (messenger) during the failed attack on Pozieres during World War I.
- Australian Women at Work - almost a third of working age women participated in paid work during World War II, many in roles unavailable to them before the war, proudly demonstrating they were more than capable of doing any job that was needed.
- Alex Garlin - current President of the National Servicemen's Association of Queensland, he was living in Coorparoo when recruited to the navy through the 1950's National Service Scheme, spending time aboard The Vengeance aircraft carrier in Japan, and instilling a lifelong legacy of brotherhood amongst fellow Nasho's in later years.
Places are limited so bookings are essential.Venue: Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.
