Shantell Martin and Absolut Art launches in Australia this February 2020 with a pop-up exhibition at MCM House during the week of Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
The exhibition will run at MCM House from February 28th - March 6th and will be open to the public.
London-born, New York-based artist Shantell Martin is an LGBTQ+ activist, who explores identity, intersectionality, and play in her signature black and white drawings that she often stages as performances for a live audience. Collaboration is key to her practice, which has included partnerships with the New York City Ballet, Kendrick Lamar, and Kelly Wearstler.
The partnership continues Absolut's 39-year history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community and involves global programming during LGBTQ+ events in Australia, Sweden, and the United States, with an accompanying print collection on AbsolutArt.com.
"It's a wonderful honour to celebrate PRIDE in Sydney this year! Now more than ever, especially as a queer, woman of colour, and artist, I feel a deep responsibility to use my craft and my voice to connect, celebrate and honour my community.
Globally, I also feel that PRIDE has become something much greater than we could have ever imagined it would have, not even 20 years ago. It gives me hope that the conversation will continue and we will continue to rise, together." says Shantell Martin.
"I've known Shantell for almost 10 years and have always been a huge admirer of her work. Both her practice and drawings explore important themes of intersectionality, identity, and technology, making her one of today's most important artists and cultural facilitators. Absolut Art is thrilled to be sharing Shantell's work in Sydney, celebrating not only LGBTQ+ artists and people of colour, but everyone invested in a more inclusive future." says Michelle Grey, Absolut Art Creative Director.
