'Shadows are always a direct response to whatever light hits. An essence of a tree and its presence of light produces a cast shadow. Being aware of where the light is coming from, and its ambiance around an object, directs the composition and tells a story.
This exhibition is informative of my studies of light and cast shadow, which influences life. The artworks are a response within to portray my local environment. In a world of uncertainty, there is consistency in nature. These works embrace being within the landscape and the emotional journey. It is a constant challenge translating the light, shadow, line, form, and colour of my surroundings.
From emotion, I paint the feeling of freedom and the unknown, rather than what is before me. My palette reflects this and is of a light nature, but with the depths of black. Life has highs and lows, just as with light and shadow. Focusing on the light gives comfort and hope. Black and white gestural marks direct impressions of light and vulnerability. Once we are receptive to explore outside the norm, that's when it gets exciting. To set in motion a reaction from the viewer, positive or negative, the balance of opposite forces. With light, there is shadow.' - Sharon Candy, 2020
