The late 90s and early 2000s was a critical time for the LGBTIQ community. For the first time, in 1994 the Mardi Gras parade was filmed by the ABC TV. Although this was a great leap forward in the acceptance of the LGBTIQ community, there was still a large proportion of Australian society that displayed homophobic attitudes. In January 1997, Prime Minister John Howard refused to offer a message of support to Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras.
Set in that tumultuous time, Romeo and Juliet presented by SheShakespeare is the story of Juliet, a young woman from a strict and conservative family, who falls in love with the only daughter of the libertarian Montague family, Romeo.
The Montagues and Capulets are at war due to their opposing positions on the LGBTIQ Community. When Romeo crashes a party at the Capulet house she meets and falls in love with Juliet. Juliet is stricken by her feelings towards Romeo and cannot deny her love for another woman. Romeo and Juliet secretly continue to explore their love and with the help of Friar Laurence, who hopes to reconcile the 2 families through their children's union, they’re secretly married. Tragedy follows as the star-crossed lovers fight for their right to be together.
