This one-off online session is to prepare deaf and hard of hearing youth with the skills, tools and confidence to navigate their way successfully through high school. You may be in the last few years of primary school and entering high school, or a deaf or hard of hearing youth who is already in high school wanting to understand and improve their high school experience. Family, in particular parents, grandparents and family friends as well as teachers who work with deaf and hard of hearing youth are also encouraged to join in.
The challenges and barriers faced by deaf and hard of hearing youth will be addressed during this 90 minute online session. You'll be equipped with the skills to manage the unique challenges that deaf and hard of hearing youth experience at secondary school.
Some of these challenges that will be covered are:
challenges with having more than one teacher
creating new friends
catching public transport
going from primary school with a deaf facility to a mainstream high school

having confidence to speak out
At the end of the session you will:
have the confidence to enter or navigate your way around high school as a deaf or HoH person
be able to speak to teachers and ask for help when you have an issue in the classroom
normalise the wearing of hearing aids and cochlear implants
break down the fear of not making friends or connecting with peers
normalise the presence of visiting teachers in the classroom
normalise the use of Roger system or FM units/assistive technology in the classroom
