Boom! International Festival of Percussion presents.
What are traditional rhythms?
Do we need to learn traditional rhythms from Africa and other countries? How useful would this knowledge be for musicians in general, not just drummers and percussionists?
In this 90-minute workshop, leading Australian percussionist, Ray Pereira, will look at these and other questions related to traditional styles of drumming and their application to more contemporary music forms.
Ray will elaborate on his ideas on African polyrhythmic cycles and how they should be heard and felt in order to be played most effectively.
The workshop will start with a performance from The Afro Lankan Drumming System, featuring Ray and Sri Lankan drummer, Kanchana Karunaratna.
As well as percussionists, this session will be valuable for musicians in general, especially keyboard players and players of melodic instruments.
Please note the workshop is limited to 30 participants. Non-percussionist participants are requested to bring an instrument. Percussionist participants are requested to bring an instrument or select from available instruments on the day.
