'Unboxed / Lahtipakitud' takes place on Gadigal country and was conceptualised on Wallumedegal land. On behalf of the Estonian Society of Sydney we want to acknowledge the traditional Elders of this land and extend our respect to all First Nations people in their ongoing connection and care for country.
❦
'Unboxed / Lahtipakitud' is a show that considers the archive as a space of activation and of continual unpacking. Running from the 11-13th November, this show highlights the diverse work of talented artists who engage with topics of memory, history and futurity. Works are set amongst the shelves and former walls once occupied by the Estonian Archives in Australia - recently relocated to a new part of the Estonian House building. The show presents alternatives and interrogations into archives through contemporary and historical narratives, looking at how the archive influences artistic practices through references and records and equally how artists speak back and create new archives through their work.
The show features archival and new work from 25 artists connected to Sydney. The artists include: Tiyan Baker, Clare Milledge, Aisyah Aaqil Sumito, nova Milne, Aulia Yeru, Agus Wijaya, Naomi Segal, Nicole Cadelina, Nolan Ho Wung Murphy, Lachie Thompson, Geirthana, Astrid Bell, Judith Martinez Estrada, Rainer Ciar, Dylan Goh, Lora Adžić, Hannah Carrol Harris, Blake Lawrence, Phuong Ngo, David Suyasa, Joshua Di Mattina-Beven, Ava Lacoon, Kieran Butler, Kate McGuinness & Billie Posters. The show is curated by Lachlan Bell as his curatorial exhibition.
❦
The exhibition will be held between 11-13th November, with free entry and donations encouraged. The opening night will begin in the main hall of Estonian House from 6pm with speeches and drinks available downstairs for purchasing/consumption. No drinks will be allowed into the gallery. Later on an intimate performance piece will be read out by one of the artists on the night.
Please note the space is not wheelchair accessible and masks are recommended to be worn on the opening night. Select artworks will be available for purchase and a portion of proceeds will go towards the Estonian House Co-operative to assist with their ongoing renovations of our community hall.
