Tenor Andrew Goodwin is one of Australia's most accomplished, versatile singers. Equally at home in the baroque, romantic, and contemporary repertoire, he is also a remarkable exponent of lieder, his facility with language and text matched with a voice of power and clarity. For this Sydney Morning Masters recital, Goodwin is partnered with pianist Sonya Lifschitz, who has continually expanded the possibilities of the traditional concert format throughout her career.
Together they will present gems of the art song repertoire, with works by Schumann (Die Lotosblume, Widmung), Fauré (Après un rêve, Au bord e l'eau), Strauss (Morgen, Zueignung), and Mahler (Wo Die Schönen Trompeten Blasen) sure to take audiences into a land of poetry. Here, moments of joy are tinged with melancholy, and visions of paradise seem just out of reach. This wistfulness pervades the work of the Russian masters, who are beloved by both Goodwin and Lifschitz. They celebrate this shared admiration by closing out the program with Scriabin's Nocturne for the Left Hand and a pair of exquisite songs by Rachmaninoff.
