Many adventures awaited the heroes and heroines of ancient Greek myth, and the narratives of their journeys often mirror each other - from the call to adventure to hazardous returns home from war and enforced migration. Inevitably, they met with challenges along the way, from the hazards of sea-faring, to encounters with exotic foreigners and deadly monsters.
In this lecture host Dr Gillian Shepherd traces these extraordinary journeys with experts K.O. Chong-Gossard, Claudia Sagona and Heather Sebo.
This lecture is one in a four-part series led by Dr Gillian Shepherd, Senior Lecturer of Classics and Ancient History at La Trobe University.
Presented as part of the Open Horizons: Ancient Greek Journeys and Connections exhibition at Melbourne Museum, in collaboration with the Hellenic Museum, La Trobe University and Museums Victoria.
