In a near future the most basic and intimate of human needs will be met by artificial intelligence and robotics. Can such systems care for us without feeling for us? Does this matter? Social robotics is a vast and emerging field trying to implement human emotion and empathy in AI. Despite spectacular leaps in AI, emotional feeling remains a last frontier. At the same time, neuroscientists have made rapid advances in understanding the relationship between bodily states and emotional feelings. Professor Gerrans discusses what lessons can be applied to AI and whether emotional AI is a worthwhile goal, even in fields such as child and aged care where intuitive empathy is so important. Dr Philip Gerrans is a Professor at University of Adelaide's School of Humanities. His research focuses on the use of psychological disorder to study the mind. He is an Associate of the Swiss Centre for Affective Sciences where he collaborates with philosophers, psychologists, and neuroscientists. He is currently completing a project on the relationship between emotional processing and self-representation with an emphasis on psychiatric disorders.
