Remnants is a body of work that stems from the artists' curiosity with family photos and heirlooms. These items connect to the people who came before and in turn connect ancestors to the present.
By collecting, assembling and reflecting upon the personal effects that belonged to Isobel's Nonni and Bisnonni (Grandparents and Great Grandparents); a search for belonging was uncovered. With in layering panels of glass to create solid structures it become a new space to value hidden and tucked away reminders of displacement, migration, isolation and gentrification: to make visible all the things Isobel's relatives went through after the Second World War. Small photos and prayer cards have been written into large icons in an effort to mirror the faith that they clung to.
The process of imprinting and layering glass that Isobel has undertaken, means the work is subject to cracking and breakage. These imperfections, ticking time bombs that could fracture or erase the images, speak of the fracture and erasure experienced by the people and places featured in the work. Isobel's hope is for the viewer to look at the connections they have with the past and to see them in a new light, before it might be too late.
