Marcus Whale lives and works on Gadigal land in Sydney, Australia. His work across music, performance and writing focuses on the blurry intersection between desire and religion, often with reference to the poetics of memory and ghostliness.
As a musical artist under his own name and with groups Collarbones and BV, his recorded output primarily forms an electronic world around his singing. Solo album The Hunger (2021), a vampire story, was nominated for the Australian Music Prize. Ensemble Offspring, The Song Company, Zubin Kanga, Claire Edwardes, Synergy Percussion and others have performed his compositions across Australia and internationally.
Recent stage works, Lucifer and The Hunger in collaboration with Athena Thebus and Chloe Corkran and Praise! in collaboration with Eugene Choi have been presented by Performance Space, Asia Topa, Next Wave, Sugar Mountain Festival, Underbelly Arts Festival and Art Month Sydney. As a performer or composer he has contributed to recent performance works by Ivan Cheng, Agatha Gothe-Snape, Martin Del Amo, Paul Mac, Harriet Gillies and Xanthe Dobbie.
